In fact, in today's world, it is preferable that whoever becomes president of a country has a level of Statesman not merely a president by election of votes cast at the polls.  In the Dominican Republic since its birth as a nation presidents with the status of statesman can be counted on the fingers of one hand and there are plenty of fingers to count. No Dominican "with three fingers of a forehead" as my grandmother used to say, doubts that Dr. Fernández possesses all the qualities of a statesman. He is a statesman in terms of intellectual and political leadership.  But a ruler or president of a country cannot govern it alone. For a statesman, the benign judgment of history is the guide and banner.
